A pilonidal cyst is type of cysts caused by groups of hairs and debris trapped in the pores of the skin in the upper cleft of the buttock. This medical condition results with accumulation of pus around the infected area, making it very painful experience.
According to the doctors, there are 3 theories of forming this cyst:
- A hair follicle becomes stretched, or irritated during activities that apply pressure on the but area such as cycling or horseback riding.
- Loose hair might get trapped in the crease of the buttocks, and poke the skin causing an opening that leads to an infection.
- The cyst could be congenital, or present at birth.
- A Swollen area
- Skin redness
- Pus or blood leaking from the infected area
- Bad smell
If you recognize some of the symptoms above, make an appointment with your doctor immediately. In the best-case scenario, doctor will have to drain the cyst which is possible right in the office, along with the prescription of antibiotics.
In critical situation, surgery is the only way you treat it. This kind of surgery requires about a month of recovery.
However, if you deal with cyst that doesn’t need any treatment and doesn’t show any of the symptoms, all you need to do is to keep the area dry and clean and avoid seating on hard surfaces for longer period of time.
